Whenever I see Christmas written like "Xmas," I can't help but think "crossmas" in my head. My chemistry teacher would often shorten the term "crystals" to "xtals," not sure if that's standard or not, but I kept thinking "crosstals" there too.

Can someone tell me where this shorter form came from? I know it's not a debate, but it could be. It just doesn't make terribly much sense to me to shorten it like that.

I imagine it is a sort of colloquialism derived from christ: Christ = Cross = X. Since someone thought this up it has moved into use on any word which has a 'kris' sound in it; xmas, xtians, xtals, xpy pancackes etc

Ah I see. I haven't seen xtians before, or xpy, but crosspy pancakes does sound appetising.

X represents the Greek letter chi, the first letter of Christ.

I had a feeling it was to do with Greek. Just about any word with "ch" pronounced as a k is Greek, or a mix of Greek and Latin or what have you.

I don't know many of the Greek characters, but I know most of the names of them.

You hate America and Christ. Who are you Satan, or Bin Laden?

My guess is he's an Austrailian homo that wants to drain Bin Ladens pole.

This is ironic, me defending STANG, but I don't think he said that he hates Christ. Xmas is a commercial holiday disguised as a religious holiday. Using Xmas doesn't mean you hate Christ. It just means you are referring to the commercial holiday.

Are you an idiot or did you just refuse to read his post? I think he explained exactly what he meant.

So where in this post does he say he hates Christ? Or even for that matter, the US. Being cross is a state of being angry, not hate.

It's just a lazy way of writing Christmas...many words in America these days are shortened, especially sports teams' names....Bosox, Chisox, D-Backs, etc....

I was always told that the X came from pagans who didn't want to acknowledge Christ as the reason for Christmas.
