Whenever I see Christmas written like "Xmas," I can't help but think "crossmas" in my head. My chemistry teacher would often shorten the term "crystals" to "xtals," not sure if that's standard or not, but I kept thinking "crosstals" there too.
Can someone tell me where this shorter form came from? I know it's not a debate, but it could be. It just doesn't make terribly much sense to me to shorten it like that.
Originally posted by StarrmanAh I see. I haven't seen xtians before, or xpy, but crosspy pancakes does sound appetising.
I imagine it is a sort of colloquialism derived from christ: Christ = Cross = X. Since someone thought this up it has moved into use on any word which has a 'kris' sound in it; xmas, xtians, xtals, xpy pancackes etc
Originally posted by SiskinI had a feeling it was to do with Greek. Just about any word with "ch" pronounced as a k is Greek, or a mix of Greek and Latin or what have you.
X represents the Greek letter chi, the first letter of Christ.
I don't know many of the Greek characters, but I know most of the names of them.

You hate America and Christ. Who are you Satan, or Bin Laden?

Originally posted by DreamlaXIt's just a lazy way of writing Christmas...many words in America these days are shortened, especially sports teams' names....Bosox, Chisox, D-Backs, etc....
