Is it possible for an opponent to revert the board to an earlier stage of a game? I was playing today and swore it was an "old" game. Or does the system sometimes revert to an earlier stage?

check the game log and there will be time stamps on every move

No, that isn't possible. Were you perhaps looking at the Analyse board?
