I've read scenarios that say a direct hit from an F5 hurricane on New Orleans would devastate the city. Much of the city is below sea level as is, and the massive influx of water from an F5 could leave the entire city underwater. I understand that damming projects have robbed the Mississippi delta of replenishing silt over the years, leaving New Orleans even more vulnerable to such a potential catastrophe.
It appears that hurricane Katrina will be an F5 and that it will give New Orleans a direct hit within the next few days.
Has anyone read anything else on this topic?
Originally posted by rwingettI just read about it on the BBC and they say the city is being evacuated, but there are 10 locations being set up for people unable to leave. So maybe parts of the city won't be flooded, or these scenarios were more sensationalism than fact?

Originally posted by mosquitorespectI think I read about it in "Discover". Obviously that is the worst case scenario. I guess we'll see what happens.

Maybe this will mean the difference between a Democrat winning the next election? Boy, using Fedral tax dollars to clean up rotting Republicans seems such a waste dosn't it?
