    The number of lost marbles has to be between 2 and 14 due to grammatical reasons.

    But Janell lost them, not her teacher. You are putting the blame on the worng person 😉

    Answer:

    It depends on whether they are really lost forever or whether it was just not possible to locate them at the moment the question was asked.

    How can you be sure she didn’t steal them from her brother?

    How can we be sure there were any marbles in the first place?

    That could mean that Janell truly has lost her marbles.

    15, she just doesn’t know where “some” of them are.

    The teacher said she'd lost only some of them. So someone is not telling the truth. Maths was more straightforward in my day.

    X = marbles left.

    Y= marbles lost.

    Y= 15-X.

    Anywhere from 8 to 13 marbles.

    It's an odd sort of math question, but maybe it's also a test of reading compression. Whenever math is applied to real life situations it doesn't always yield crisp/clean (definitive, one number only) answers.

    Discriminating against the algebra-challenged is a no no.
