The number of lost marbles has to be between 2 and 14 due to grammatical reasons.

X = marbles left.

Y= marbles lost.

Y= 15-X.

Anywhere from 8 to 13 marbles.

It's an odd sort of math question, but maybe it's also a test of reading compression. Whenever math is applied to real life situations it doesn't always yield crisp/clean (definitive, one number only) answers.
