i was on leave from the usn and on a flight from paris to jfk, coach class, one step from the baggage hold
he was in first class, but the word spread that he was aboard the eight hour ride and he came thru the cabin and shook everyone's hand, that wanted to shake it
this was 1973 and there were a few who still complained bitterly, and loudly, that his name was cassius, not muhammad

i've never before, or since, seen a man's hand as large as a ham

They do. Absolutely right. Ali was the classiest, most charismatic, boxer ever. His every puffed-up, dramatic, taunting, poetic posture positively ooozed irony and humility.
