Stupid Question number 1......and 2

Why do players with high ratings play people with low ratings??? Is this points padding, narcism, or just playing your mates? Does the amount of points gained reflect the difference?

Personally, in tourneys I hate playing anyone rated more than 200 pts lower since it really is a hiding to nothing.

If you win it was to be expected and you don't really gain much rating points and if you lose or draw it's a disaster.

I much prefer playing high rated opponents.
