Anybody know what's going on with Hushpuppy? I noticed he's time-outed in all of his games for the past month. Hope he's OK.

I timed Hushpuppy out on two tourney games today. I didn't want to penalize him for having an illness or family matter that kept him from finishing our games.

I don't know if the allegations about him using a chess engine are true or not. I do believe that without honor - we are nothing. What possible satisfaction could someone have knowing that they won a game using a computer or book. They are only cheating themselves.

Nothing wrong with books... don't fall for thinking that is che@ing, it is not in this type of chess.

Be sure to add to your profile that you don't want to play games using books, add " No Books Please " to your game names.... but don't call that che@ing. It is not.

I don't think you can tell your opponents not to use books in tournies. Fair enough if it is a friendly challenge, but defo not in competitive games. I'd like to hear what any of the top 20 would say if you told them not to use books/databases in your games with them.

That is where that 'please' comes in.

What's the difference between using a computer and a book during a game with someone? The best reader or referencer wins? It seems like splitting hairs to me. It's not your brain but someone else's behind the moves recorded in some external medium.

You're not allowed to use a book in a live tourney - so why is it alright here?

This is not a 'live tourney'

This is "correspondence chess". Don't get me wrong, I felt the same way when I came here. Now, when I play higher rated players... or agree with another user... I whip out the book and do some study. It is not cheating here, and it will help your game. Most all my moves here are mine, and I know the ones that are not by either game title or player played.

So it's considered alright to reference a book for moves during a tourney here?

It sure is... but don't use a chess engine to pick your moves. Data is fine, engine picking the move from data is not. Don't mix them up.

There might be many book moves for a game, don't let the engine pick it.

I appreciate your response. That just doesn't seem right to me to use any type of external data for a tourney game. That sure gives me a different perpective on high ranked players here. I never considered that I was playing a reference book in some of these tourney games.

I try to avoid forced games.... I do play a few tourneys... I do play a few clans. Other than that, I like to play the kind (and evil) people I meet here.

You're right. I looked up the official rules for correspondence chess.

http://www.uschess.org/cc/ccrules.php

It's right there under rule number 3.

I can also see where internet chess is also like a live match. It's something between the two (correspondence and live match play).

Perhaps they should consider "no book or periodical" tourneys to seperate the live players from the scholars in some matches.

Again, thanks for the responses. I definitely learned something about chess at this site from this thread.

That is of course the USCF rules on correspondence chess, those elsewhere may differ.

Although I do very much like rule 2.
