I'm just after realising something cool.
When I was doing my Final Year Project in university in 1999, I'm pretty sure Rival was one of the chess engine's that I studied to write my own chess engine.

Alright. If you simply mean the best performing, I'd say it's a toss up between Junior and Shredder. But there are many other components of a chess engine that you'll want to think about before making your decision. If you have some specific questions, I'd be happy to help.
