1) does MCO (14th) have the Alipin variation to the Scilian. I'm got a
raging headache and haven't managed to find it tonight.
2) the embarasing bit is I'm confused as to the move tables in MCO...
I don't understand what the rows & columns refer to. I kind of get that
the first x moves are set because that makes it that opening, and
that after that the rows refer to the next move... but I don't get how
the columns work. Is it that ach column refers to a different responce?
If so where do you go for the next responce? Can someone teach me?
I hate to admit my ignorance, but I'm SO good at it,
Jon
Dave,
Just checking that you didn't think that Yan was really trying to trick
me... we've played so many intense games (well 3 anyway) now that I
know his sense of humour & that he was joking.
Thanks for the real answer though - I knew the 2nd move but could
get lost after the 3rd. I'm looking at p.350 now (Scilian defence -
unusual 2nd moves) but still can only see 2.c3 in row 9, column 2 &
that can't be right. ANy chance of a quick briefing on how to read the
tables? Is such a thing possible? I'm sure it's something simple & that
I'm just looking at them the wrong way..
You are doing it wrong...you take the text at top in bold...let's just do
the first one.
1.e4 c5
2.c3....now here is where you drop down and go straight down
.......Nf6
3.e5 Nd5
4.d4(a) (Here is where you would look at "(a)" and see what an
alternative mose is to 4.d4)
......cxd4
5.Nf3 Nc6
6.Bc4....etc
After 5.Nf3 for white a popular line for black is 5...e6 (See column 2
and you would just go down from there...same as all of the other
columns when it comes to your opponent choosing a line)
I hope that explains it better.
Dave
