Do most software programs allow one to add game databases found elsewhere?

Thanks,

generally yes. the file should be a "pgn" type file. Like tal.pgn would be a collection of Tal's games. Most of these files are "stand alone" and do not combine with other pgn files....but I suspect there is a way to combine one pgn with another with some third party app.

This might get you started in finding links to a variety of such collections.

Use a search engine such as google, and enter "chess pgn file collections".

I just gave that a try and saw quite a few links for you to browse through. I don't know if this is really helpful for you, but it's worth a try. 🙂

Pgn files can be read with a text file reader such as notepad and thus merging individual games or collections of games into the same file is no more difficult than copy, paste and save.

If you accidentally create the file as a .txt you have only to alter the file extension from .txt to .pgn and your pgn software should be able to recognise and read it.
