I've never minded when a player plays on in a totally lost position.
I feel my bound duty to try and find the smartest way to wrap it up.

What I do find dismaying is when my best laid schemes get foiled because
my opponent makes a further blunder and I have to play a banal mate.

I'm White, a piece up and trap hunting.

Funny when all is said and done outside of that pesky mate the point value is even, 21 on each side (counting queen as 10)

Regarding your note on White's 9th move: 9... Kb6 10 Ba5+ Kc5 and the King wriggles away to d4 for the time being. 10. Bd4+ as you note does lead to mate.

    Well, that's your problem!

As bad a player as I am, I never find it a problem to just cold-bloodedly walk a pawn up the aisles. A win is a win, and I'll take a stone-faced win as happily as a grinning one. In fact, I'll be grinning inside.

Quite correct in view, simply putting theory in to practice.

My 'School' of thought is, yes the position is lost. I'll make you work for the win. When I reach a clear stage of no heavy material, enough is enough.

    Hi Shallow-Blue,

    Well, that's your problem!

Not really a problem, I try to give my best (depending on time and mood) and
try not to go for a routine win playing through the motions. If I see a chance for
a snap crisp finish then I work on it. I like to think they might pick up a trick or two
for their future games. Although some of my opponents might be rated quite
low I try, as Tarrasch did, make a game a lesson - for both of us.

Also, brillo-hunting' keeps one alert, no stumbling into stalemates etc..

Well, morally I can't blame you. You aim to have fun in the game, and so do I. It's just that I love a brilliancy when it's correct, but a gamble...
Gambles on the chessboard are definitely worth playing when the alternatives are also either a gamble, or a slog. On those occasions, I do agree with you. It's just that I also see beauty in the inevitable, unstoppable March of the Black Soon-to-be-Queen. It may not be spectacular, but it's definitively convincing, and in my arrogant opionion, very satisfying when you manage to pull it off.
