A funny thing happened to me in the last round of the US Open Quad. I was sitting down in front of a young individual whom I knew I would be playing and I had been observing him while he played his first two rounds. He had that hyperactivity that seems to be a part of so many people of his age. I figured if I could keep him sitting down I would have a good chance of winning. That's not really relevant to the story but it's fun to tell.
Anyway, we both castled king-side. A few moves later he played Ng3. Then on his next move he played Nf1. I looked at my score sheet and I couldn't find where he played Re1. So I asked him, "Hey, I'm kinda old. Can you tell me when you played Re1?"
He looked on his sheet and then moved his knight back to g3 and his rook back to f1. He might have mumbled, "Sorry," or something like that.
I played a good game until I decided to give up a knight for no compensation. Sigh...
What would you have done had you been playing him and he had some how gotten his rook to e1 without noting it?

You know, hindsight tells me perhaps I should have gotten the TD and asked for his advice. But would he have done? The only thing he might have done would be to penalize my opponent some time, which _could_ have helped in the time scramble at the end, but it might not have. The time limit was G/60 with 5 second increment. I was a little nervous about my own time and not thinking about my opponent's time. As soon as he took his move back I restarted his clock. What a weird situation. I wonder if he made that "mistake" in any of his other games?
