So I have been playing chess on my smartphone, 'chess online' and they assign numbers when you play a certain number of games.

So I recorded the win/lose record before and after a number change,

    Before the change, 840 wins, 141 losses. Number= 30
    So I lost a game, 840 wins, 142 losses, new # = 31

I divided the totals and got nowhere. What is the math behind the change in my number? I had recorded earlier number changes but can't find it right now. Is there enough info in those two data points for an answer? For instance, 31 squared= 961, no help. 982-961=21 no help.

Your rating on any site depends on your results and the rating of the opponent at the time.
The info is available here somewhere.

Perhaps the number is a handicap, similar to golf or bowling.

This is not a rating like we know it, it is just a number indicating how many games have been played. I also missed one number, the draws, so with the draws, 9 of them, the total is 990 which is the last 30 number I was assigned. With 991, it goes to 31. So it makes a bit more sense now, 990/30 = 33. So I will find out if the next end point of 31 is 1023, 31 X33.
