    Wasn't Lucy an Australopithecus afarensis?

    Of course they're extinct. Been so for 2 million years now, when one of the Australopithecus species evolved into the Homo genus. But you are correct in that they now think that some Homo genus fossils have been found that are older than A. afarensis, so it may be another of the many Australopithecus species with the Homo lineage.
