Baseball fans, count your blessings. Wherever you live, it could be worse!
For 40 years, I've watched with mild dismay as the Seattle Mariners
and their fans bask in the fog of mediocrity. Year after year, Mariner
ownership unfailingly pays for just enough talent to call itself a major
league team, and legions of loyal Mariner fans happily pay their hard
earned dollars for the privilege of sitting on their rumps with their little
baseball caps yacking about ERA's and batting averages, as their
home team ends another season far out of the playoff hunt. With the
exception of a few teams in the 90's, this has been the accepted way
things are done in the Pacific Northwest. Tell a baseball fan this, and
all you'll hear is a boatload of statistics, but all the numbers in the world
won't change history. If Yankee ownership in New York did this, there
would be public lynchings! (with the full blessing of New Yorkers everywhere)
It's interesting that so few people from the Northwest seem to care if the
Mariners win or not. Maybe the Mariners should change their logo, from
their present one to that of Ziggy the loveable loser.
