It appears that he is another addict trying to beat his addiction, having checked into rehab. Let us hope that he can beat his debilitating illness.

I just hope that Michael realises that there ain't no mountain high enough, and makes his way out of the valley of darkness on his own. All he can do is realise that it'll be a path full of ups and downs, and take the road to recovery, one step at a time.
