Because Rafa needs to know that every player at Liverpool is 100% committed to the club. It's the reason they haven't followed up their interest in Malouda and the reason they felt confident enough to not rush things with Atleti regarding Torres. One player wasn't making the right noises the other was.

Michael Owen shafted LFC back in 2004 when, after saying he would sign a new contract, he allowed his contract to run down and then after meeting Rafa (and saying he was staying) he decided to tell LFC to strike a deal with Real just before the new season started.

LFC had no choice as Owen could talk to Real the following January and leave on a Bosman the next summer, so had to sell him for £8M!!!!! The icing on the cake is that in Rafa's first season in charge we won the European Cup - the medal that Owen reckoned he had more chance of winning with Real than us. In fact since Owen left LFC he's won nothing! Stevie G and Carra have won the European Cup, FA Cup, Super Cup and Charity Shield.

When Owen had the chance to return (Real wanted shot of him and he wanted to go) all he had to do was sit tight and tell them to negotiate with LFC as apparently LFC officials had asked him to do. He was worried that it might not come off and went to NUFC for mega bucks and guaranteed 1st team football ahead of the WC.

In other words, he lied to us, shafted us and f'ed up the chance he had to come back. LFC are a better side under Rafa, and if he doesn't want him then you won't find too many LFC fans disagreeing.
