American Football evolved frfom an English game called Rugby Football.
In the early days of American Football the entire Freshman class of Harvard used to play against the entire Sophmore class to carry a ball across a gaol line. There were essentially no rules.
This game evolved from an ancient English tradition that I like to call "Sausage Smuggling." In that game, two nearby towns would face off on a large field, the entire able-bodied population of each town attempting to smuggle a large sausage across a line into the other towns "end zone"
The winning town got to feast on the large sausage.
