I see that Brentford FC and Fulham FC are in the playoffs to
compete in the Premier League next season. Reputedly this
is the biggest match (financially) in any sport in the world
being worth something like £15 million to the winner.

But my interest was in Brentford being called "The Bees". I spent
some time living in High Barnet and the local team Barnet FC were
"the Bees". I supposed the nickname derived from their black and
amber shirts but a local man put me straight when he told me of
the local bee-keeping industry which had thrived in the early 1900s.
The shirts reflected the nickname, not the other way round!

Now why are Brentford being called "The Bees"? Well, it turns out
that is historically incorrect; they should be called "The B's". And
for the history behind that you can google it yourself!

With Brentford losing I think that we (Chelsea) are hoping to land Benrahma.

LOL ... I had to lookup "Chairboys"!
Thought I knew most of the nicknames of league clubs.

Not a soccer fan but in the late sixties, like all my peers, I had the collector books
for player cards and team badge stickers. (I think the packet included some gum!)

It was a matter of honour knowing grounds, nicknames, colours of all the
teams. I remember one lad suffering because he had a Burnley shirt and
thought it was West Ham. (Living in East London this was NOT cool!)

@wolfgang59 we have only been in the league since Martin O'Neill got us up in early 90s so probably never came across Wycombe, though been around since 1884 and won several Amatuer FA cups at Wembley in the 50's, used to contribute quite a few players to the Olympic team as in the old days players couldn't be from professional clubs

Is there anything Martin can’t do?

I saw Wycombe play at Villa Park in 2001 when your manager was Lawrie Sanchez. That was a game we had to win for many reasons! 😁

Watched your play off final. Congratulations. Stubbornly hung on to a lead. Strong at set pieces. You can get a cup run by being hard to break down. Who knows??
