When I was a youth, there was a war on in Indochina. Students at UC Berkeley opposed to the war were engaged in running street battles with the police, throwing rocks and so on. The graffiti on the walls in Berkeley read "resist authority". I went to UC Santa Cruz. We studied the chemistry of psycho-active drugs, both theoretically and practically (psilocybin grew wild in the meadows there). There were no riots in Santa Cruz. The graffiti on the walls read "ignore authority."
Ronald Reagan was governor at that time, BTW. He came to visit UCSC once. The campus was situated on a hill overlooking Monterrey Bay at the edge of a redwood forest which extended up to Oregon. Reagan's comment was "if you've seen one redwood, you've seen 'em all." That's when I wrote off Reagan as a jackass.
