He certainly had a large following, but is it comparable? In fact, how does one compare?
I suppose you could do a head count, for which Jesus wins.
The other criteria is rather difficult to ascertain. You could look at evidence of their teachings that effect the world today. For example, when it comes to giving their time and money to the poor, Christians far outshine those not of faith consistently. Can the same be said for those following Buddha?

What I find interesting is that in the spirituality forum people have a problem with pretty much everyone, including myself. However, when it comes to Jesus they seem to admire him, despite people like myself and who try to follow him.

Jesus advocated progressive taxation and welfare for the poor, and he hugged sex workers. Overall, I'd say we're making some progress towards the progressive activism that Jesus advocates widely in the New Testament, just as long as global warming doesn't nail us first.
