Exactly how widespread was human sacrifice in the ancient religious world?
I think this key to better understanding why Abraham in the Bible was asked to sacrifice his own son and then stopped at the last minute. It sent a message that this God was not like the other Gods, human sacrifice would never be permitted.

What makes you think this was 'human sacrifice'? Was the site isolated for a thousand years, or did someone just dump a dead body there just last month?
