I got a tee shirt for my 75th Birthday

Notice there is a green pawn on e4!!

I wonder if they do t-shirts for those who play the London System. If so
they will be in pansy pink and have ‘Kick Me Hard’ printed on the back.

Another recent second hand purchase was this...

Another book on endgames? Yes! Do not blame me, these are the books that
punters are unloading, books on the endgame. If it cost anymore than the £2.00
I paid for it then I would have left it where it was. O. K. Let’s have look at it.

101 endgames that have been botched by grandmasters. No idea if it is any good.
I read the intro, picked up an idea for the blog and read no further. I’ll pass it onto
some hapless, forlorn lonely joe to add to their collection of books on chess endings

From the introduction. S. Sjugirov - A. Galkin, Russia .2008 (White to play)

75. Kg2 draws. White played 75.Ng7 Nd6! the White Knight is trapped 0-1.

If we want to see botched endgames then Red Hot Pawn is where to go.

ZZR1 - boudicca RHP 2011 (Black has just played 55...Nf7-h8)

White played 57. Kxh8 Kf8 and the Knight cannot lose a tempo to prevent Black
from playing Kf7 - Kf8 - Kf7 forever. The game was agreed drawn a few moves later.

mexdegex - LilLollo RHP 2022 (Black to play)

47....Nd4+ should win for Black. Instead they played 47...a2 (OOPS!)

small puzzles

I visited the recent Scottish Open held in Hamilton. it supplies weeks puzzles.

E. Clark - A. Humam Scottish Open 2026. (White to play)

Black has just played 26...Re8-e7

27. Rxh6+ gxh6 28. Qxh6+ 1-0 if 28...Qh7 29 Qf8 mate.

H. Lamarque - S. Rath Scottish Open 2026. (White to play)

White played 26.Bxf6 gxf6 27.Qxf6 going for a perpetual. Was that a good idea?

Clue
Before making a drastic decision always check your back rank.

26.Bxf6 gxf6 27.Qxf6 Qxb8+ 0-1

M. Morrison - A. Mittal Scottish Open 2026.(White to play)

White played 30. Qb7 and lost. Find a better 30th move.

30. Bg6 and if 30...Rxa7 31. Rf8+ Kd7 32. Bf5 mate.

Z. Patton - R. McKay Scottish Open 2026 (Black to play)

Black has a forced mate in four moves.

Clue
