Mihai Șubă is a Romanian chess player, who is best known for being a Grandmaster. Șubă was born on June 1, 1947, in Bucharest, Romania. He won the Romanian Chess Championship six times and qualified for the Chess World Cup 2017 at the age of 69.
Early in his career, Șubă defected to England while participating in the 1988 Thessaloniki Chess Olympiad for the Romanian team. He competed for England in the 1990 Novi Sad and 1992 Manila Chess Olympiads, and then returned to Romania in 1992.
In 1984, he was awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster. He later earned the title of FIDE Senior Trainer in 2005.
In 2014, Șubă competed in the World Senior Championship and finished in first place, resulting in him earning the title of World Senior Champion. His other notable international successes include the London 1984 (equal first with Ray Keene), the Mamaia 1988 (second after Vasily Ivanchuk), the Cannes 1997 (first), the Eforie Nord 1999 (first), and the Baile Touma 2014 (first).
