Győző Forintos was a notable Hungarian chess Grandmaster (GM) and chess author, born on 30 July 1935 in Budapest and died on 5 December 2018. Known for his contributions to the world of chess predominantly in the 1960s and 1970s, Forintos honed his playing skills in postal chess competitions and went on to achieve the title of International Master (IM) in 1963. He won the Hungarian National Championship in 1968/69 and placed highly in several other Hungarian championships as well.

Forintos' International Grandmaster (GM) title came in 1974. He competed in eight Interzonal Tournaments: five via correspondence (1955, 1958, 1961, 1964 and 1967), and three over-the-board (1962, 1964, and 1967). Forintos' chess playing style is described as committed, enthusiastic and systematic, placing a strong focus on the opening part of the game.

Apart from his direct involvement with the game, he also wrote and contributed to several chess books, with many titles focusing on the opening strategies of chess. His 1977 book written with Ervin Haag and translated into English as "Openings for the Club Player" is a popular reference for those seeking an introduction to opening strategies.

Forintos served as a FIDE Zonal President and worked as a University Professor outside of his chess career. His legacy continues to inspire chess players and aspirants around the world.
