Jiří Lechtýnský is a well-known Czech chess international grandmaster. He was born in Prague on April 17, 1947. He was awarded the International Master title in 1974 and the Grandmaster title in 2001. Lechtýnský became the Czechoslovak Champion in 1972 and tied for first in the 2002 Czech Championship, though he ended up taking second place after a playoff.
Lechtýnský's tournament performances include sharing second in the 1971 Sousse Zonal Tournament and outright second in Zagreb in 1971. By the mid-1980s, he had gained a reputation as a chess expert and ended up being named a grandmaster at the age of 54.
Jiří Lechtýnský, Known for his preference for closed positions, is also an accomplished chess writer. He is popular for his contributions to leading magazines, where he provides detailed coverage of famous international tournaments and overviews of interesting games. He is a co-author of the Czech book "Moderní šachy" (Modern Chess).
