Kamil Mitoń is a Polish chess player who was awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) by FIDE in 2002.
Mitoń was born in Krakow, Poland, on 12 April 1985. He quickly gained notice in Polish chess circles, winning numerous youth championships. In 2001, he became the national U20 champion, which was a significant boost to his chess career.
Internationally, Mitoń's first significant accomplishment was tying for first place in a 2004 tournament in Budapest. Later that year, he won yet another tournament, this time in Polanica-Zdrój. His success continued in 2005 when he took first place in the International Chess Festival Cracovia in his home city.
Mitoń's career then took him to the United States where he played for Texas Tech University in the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship in 2007 and 2008, winning both times.
Despite his accomplishments, Mitoń is somewhat under the radar, not known among the chess-playing public as much as his compatriots like Radosław Wojtaszek. This is possibly due to the fact that he has spent much of his career in the United States where his achievements go somewhat unnoticed by the European-focused chess media.
