From's Gambit arises after 1.f4 e5 in Bird\'s Opening. ECO code: A02.
History
Named after the Danish player Martin Severin From (1828–1895), this is Black's sharpest and most critical reply to 1.f4. From himself championed this gambit in 19th-century Scandinavian chess.
Main Lines
White has a crucial choice:
• 2.fxe5 – Accepting the gambit. After 2...d6 3.exd6 Bxd6, Black obtains rapid development and attacking chances against White's weakened kingside. Lasker's Variation (3...Bxd6 4.Nf3 g5!) is the critical test, introduced by Emanuel Lasker at Newcastle 1892.
• 2.e4 – Transposing into the King\'s Gambit, avoiding From's Gambit entirely.
Strategic Themes & Plans
Black sacrifices a pawn for rapid development, open lines toward the white king, and attacking chances on the kingside. White must defend accurately to consolidate the extra pawn. The gambit is considered one of the most dangerous weapons against Bird's Opening and has a long theoretical pedigree.
