The Budapest Defence arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5. ECO code: A51.
History
The Budapest Defence was first played at the master level in Budapest in 1896. It is a sharp gambit where Black immediately challenges White's centre by offering the e-pawn.
Main Lines
After 3.dxe5, Black's main continuation is 3...Ng4, attacking the e5-pawn and aiming for rapid piece development. White must be careful: the natural 4.Bf4? loses to 4...Nc6 5.Nf3 Bb4+ followed by ...Qe7. The main line 4.Nf3 is considered best.
Strategic Themes & Plans
Black sacrifices a pawn for rapid development, active piece play, and pressure on White's centre. If White is unprepared, the Budapest can lead to dangerous attacking positions. With precise play, White should maintain a small advantage, but the gambit offers excellent practical chances at club level.
