White develops the bishop to c4, targeting f7 and preventing ...d5 from gaining tempo. After 2...d5 3.Bb3, the bishop retreats to b3 where it remains active. The system avoids main-line theory but allows Black comfortable equality with 2...d5. The variation has some following at club level due to its simplicity.
