Overview

With 1...f5, Black adopts a Dutch Defence structure against the English Opening. This transposes into standard Dutch positions after 2.d4, or can remain an independent system if White avoids d4.

Black aims for kingside attacking chances and e4-square control, the hallmarks of the Dutch Defence. White can exploit the weakened e8–h5 diagonal with g3 and Bg2, or challenge the centre directly. The position is typically a Dutch Defence with White's c4 already played.
