Playing the English Opening

The English Opening – Reversed Sicilian arises after 1.c4 e5. ECO code: A20.

Overview

With 1...e5, Black occupies the centre and the resulting positions often resemble a Sicilian Defence with reversed colours. As theory notes, "after 1...e5, White has Black's position in the Sicilian but with an extra tempo."

Main Lines

• 2.Nc3 – The main continuation, leading to numerous sub-systems. (A21)

• 2.Nf3 – Flexible, often transposing. (A20)

• 2.g3 – The quiet approach, preparing Bg2.

Strategic Themes & Plans

The extra tempo gives White an enhanced version of Black's Sicilian position. White typically develops with Nc3, g3, Bg2, and aims for d3 followed by f4 (Grand Prix Attack reversed) or Nf3, d3 with a flexible approach. Black should aim for active piece play and a timely ...d5 break.
