Gedult's Opening
1. f3
1. f3
Gedult's Opening is an irregular chess opening defined by the move 1.f3. ECO code: A00.
Overview
The move 1.f3 is widely considered one of the worst possible opening moves for White. It does nothing for development, fails to contest the centre, weakens the king's position along the e1–h4 diagonal, and blocks the most natural development square for the g1-knight.
Strategic Themes & Plans
White has no coherent strategic plan beginning with 1.f3. The move's sole theoretical function would be to support a future e4 advance, but this is better achieved by other means (1.e4, 1.Nc3, or 1.d3 followed by e4). Black should respond with immediate central occupation—1...e5 or 1...d5—and natural development. The weakened e1–h4 diagonal can be exploited by ...Qh4+ in many lines after White plays e4 and the pawn opens the diagonal. This opening should not be confused with the Polish Opening (1.b4) or any other standard system.
