Polish - Outflank variation
1. b4 c6
1. b4 c6
The Outflank Variation of the Polish Opening arises after 1.b4 c6. ECO code: A00.
Overview
With 1...c6, Black prepares a solid central setup with ...d5, maintaining flexibility while avoiding the immediate central confrontation of 1...e5 or 1...d5. The move also keeps options open for ...Qb6 to attack the b4-pawn or ...a5 to challenge White's queenside expansion.
Main Lines
White typically continues 2.Bb2, developing the bishop to its intended diagonal, or 2.c4, steering toward an English Opening-type structure. After 2.Bb2 d5, Black obtains a solid centre and can develop naturally with ...Nf6, ...Bf5 or ...Bg4, and ...e6. The resulting positions often resemble reversed Caro-Kann Defence structures.
Strategic Themes & Plans
Black's strategy is to establish a sound central pawn structure and develop pieces harmoniously, treating White's b4-pawn as a potential target for a future ...a5 break. White aims for long-diagonal pressure with Bb2 and kingside fianchetto or a central advance with e3 and d4.
