Playing the Reti Opening

The Réti Opening with 1...d6 arises after 1.Nf3 d6. ECO code: A04.

Overview

With 1...d6, Black adopts a Pirc Defence or Modern Defence setup, planning to fianchetto the king's bishop to g7. This flexible response avoids early confrontation in the centre.

Main Lines

The game can develop along several paths:

• 2.d4 – Transposing into standard 1.d4 systems, often the Pirc Defence or Old Indian Defence.

• 2.e4 – Transposing into the Pirc Defence directly.

• 2.g3 – White also fianchettoes, leading to a double-fianchetto battle.

Strategic Themes & Plans

Black aims for a flexible, solid setup with ...Nf6, ...g6, ...Bg7, and ...0-0, maintaining options for central counterplay with ...e5 or ...c5. White should seek to establish a space advantage with a timely d4 and e4 before Black completes the setup.
