Reti Opening
1. Nf3 d5
1. Nf3 d5
The Réti Opening with 1...d5 arises after 1.Nf3 d5. ECO code: A06.
Overview
The most classical response to 1.Nf3—Black occupies the centre immediately with a pawn on d5. This is the starting point for the Réti Opening proper (with 2.c4) as well as many transpositions into other openings.
Main Lines
White's principal continuations are:
• 2.c4 – The Réti Opening proper (A09), challenging the d5-pawn directly.
• 2.g3 – The King's Indian Attack / Barcza System (A07), preparing Bg2 and hypermodern central control.
• 2.d4 – Transposing into the Queen\'s Gambit or other d4 systems.
• 2.b3 – The Nimzowitsch-Larsen approach, fianchettoing the queen's bishop.
Strategic Themes & Plans
This is one of the great crossroads in opening theory. White can steer the game in many different directions—hypermodern (g3, Bg2), classical (d4), or flank-based (c4, b3). Black's central pawn on d5 is a solid anchor, and Black typically responds to White's chosen setup with natural development.
