Reti v Dutch
1. Nf3 f5
1. Nf3 f5
The Réti vs Dutch arises after 1.Nf3 f5. ECO code: A04.
Overview
With 1...f5, Black plays a Dutch Defence setup, aiming for kingside attacking chances and control of the e4-square. Against 1.Nf3, this is a common and logical choice for Dutch Defence players, as 1.Nf3 frequently transposes into 1.d4 systems.
Main Lines
White can transpose into standard Dutch Defence positions with 2.d4, or can exploit the independent move order with 2.g3 (preparing Bg2 with pressure on the weakened a8–h1 diagonal), 2.c4, or the aggressive 2.e4 (the Lisitsin Gambit, also known as the Pirc-Lisitsin Gambit).
Strategic Themes & Plans
The key feature of 1...f5 is that it weakens the e8–h5 diagonal and the a2–g8 diagonal, which White can exploit with a fianchettoed bishop on g2. White often aims to open the position with d3–e4 or to challenge the f5-pawn directly. Black should complete development quickly and aim for typical Dutch middlegame structures (Stonewall or Leningrad).
