@metal-brain saidI’m sure a lot of Europeans did observe that but didn’t want to upset the church and get set fire to or something.
Even ancient people could tell the sun was far way from the moon just by observing the shadow of the moon. The Incas knew the earth revolved around the sun. Europeans were ignorant compared to them. All they had to do is observe.
@averagejoe1 saidDid they explain why the planes didn’t fly off the edge of the world and out into space
I have looked it up and never see a clear, concise explanation of the concept, with maybe one exception, and that is that a plane seems to always fly in a straight line, and never curves around the contour of the planet.
@kevcvs57 saidYet another myth.

Everybody knew the Earth was round.
No, Columbus did not get mocked for thinking the Earth was round. He got mocked for thinking it was half the size it is, and got very lucky indeed that America happens to exist.
Nobody in Europe got set on fire for thinking the Earth is round. In Tennessee, maybe. Not in Europe.
It really is time people stopped spreading this Endarkenment atheist propaganda. It's no better than Victorian rumours about the nasty habits of the cannibal tribes of inner Africa.
@kevcvs57 saidYes. There's a magnetic force field which forces them... well, it's unclear. Either back where they came, or all the way to the other side so they can continue in the same direction. It's all a bit pnambic and Metal-Brainy.

@shallow-blue saidPossibly they knew about the Bermuda Triangle ?

@shallow-blue saidNobody mocked Columbus for following Tuscanelli's map because everyone else believed it was correct.

@kevcvs57 saidThey claim Antarctica is the edge and planes never fly over it so they don't go to the edge

@athousandyoung saidNo, they didn't. They knew the Earth is larger than Columbus thought it was. That's why he had such problems getting financed. Only the inbred Spanish royals, big on money and little on knowledge, took him up on it. If America hadn't been in his way between Spain and the true Indies, there would have been a country's worth of eggs on all of their faces.

@athousandyoung saidYup, there's that claim as well. Which is rather silly, because surprise surprise, planes do fly over Antarctica on occasion...

@shallow-blue saidOnly after Columbus thought he was in India and later Amerigo found out he was not. Nobody knew how big the earth was until at least then. Probably not until Magellan's crew made it around the world.

@metal-brain saidI'm a history ignoramus because you don't know about Eratosthenes? Odd logic, but OK, if you will be that blustery...
History ignoramus.
