Annotated Chess Game 7396079

Annotation by Uncle Stosh

Reti opening for April Long Haul 2010 fell short but made a game of it.

1. Ng1f3

Not in trouble yet

1... Ng8f6

d5 will be strongly held with this support

2. c4

d5 must be weakened by attack

2... e6

black file open that can become counter attack by his bishop

3. Nb1c3

still focusing on d5

3... c5

this reduces effective counter attack from black bishop but raises question on battle for center squares

4. e3

staging support for d4, but the dilemma is that killing c5 pawn frees black bishop to pressure black file on king

4... d5

option is to leave pawn frozen on c5 by ignoring pawn on d5

5. cxd5

this frees white file for bishop to enter fight and king can castle then

5... exd5

tandem pawns can become anchor of influence in center

6. Bf1b5

not sure if advance on e5 will be available but I consider this in decision

6... Bc8d7

exchange is not mandatory with knight protecting bishop

7. O-O

why didn't try N on e5? will this remain possible now?

7... Bf8e7

black wants to castle, and d7 protected by both knights

8. d4

need to disrupt tandem pawns for attack and delay castling

8... c4

pawn on b3 should create exchange, but delayed this move

9. Nf3e5

would have been better to kill forward pawn of black

9... O-O

will white wake up and kill this pawn on c3?

10. Ne5xd7

this did not create any significant improvement and simplified choices for black

10... Nb8xd7

will white ever deal with c4?

11. Bb5a4

recognize escape may be necesary if black pawns advance

11... a6

that was anticipated

12. Ba4xd7

this did nothing

12... Qd8xd7

by wasting time ignoring d4, left bishop blocked and out of tactical use

13. Qd1a4

this is not needed at this stage

13... b5

black had this development in mind before wasting the white file bishop and white has no attack strategy

14. Qa4c2

black becomes a python crushing white and reducing attack ooptions
