New Year 2026 Blog

Before we begin here is a puzzle for all those who have not yet logged on.

And it is not going to get any better than that folks. Happy New Year.

This is one of my Christmas Presents.

It is one of those sliding puzzles things to make up a picture. I eventually solved it.

Nigel Short was at the Edinburgh Chess Club a few days before New Years Eve.

no title

He signed my copy of his book and gave a simultaneous display.

His book is very good, excellent games, honest advice and anecdotes.
He is quite hard on himself for being a lazy player and no offers no
excuse for playing the odd poor move. Published by Quality Chess
so you know it will be presented beautifully. 100% recommended.

That last one was me setting you up for this cute finish from a RHP game.

The solution follows

We stay on the same theme for this OTB treat or tragedy - you decide.

Alex Sherzer (2504) - Peter Acs, Budapest 1998 (White to play)

This follows the theme of the day but with an added twist in the tail.
