Dragan Šolak is a Serbian chess player and entrepreneur who also holds Hungarian citizenship. He was born on 30th August 1970 in Subotica, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Šolak was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 1993 by the World Chess Federation, FIDE, and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2008.
Šolak has achieved several notable victories in his chess career. In 1988, he won the Yugoslav Junior Championship, and in 1995, he won the Subotica Open. He won the Serbian Championship twice, in 1996 and 1997. In 2006, he won the Canadian Open Chess Championship held in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and placed first in the Swiss Championship in Davos. He again won the Swiss Championship in Lenzerheide in 2008.
Alongside his chess career, Šolak has also built a significant business empire. He is the founder of SBB (Serbia Broadband), the largest cable television and broadband internet provider in Serbia. In 2012, he founded United Group, which now operates in six countries across the Southeast Europe region.
In addition to SBB and United Group, Šolak also founded United Media, which owns several televisions and cable channels in the region. He is also the initiator of the Grand Chess Tour, a series of chess tournaments for the world's best players. Currently, Šolak resides in Budapest, Hungary.
