Salvador Alonso is a notable Argentine chess grandmaster. He was born on January 27, 1951, in Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Over the course of his career, he has competed in various chess tournaments, achieving significant titles and accolades.
In 1968, Alonso attained the title of Argentine Junior Champion and became an International Master in 1973. Later, in 1977, he became an International Grandmaster. His notable contributions to the chess world include his participation in nine Argentine Championships from 1971 to 1988. He received fifth place in the 1971 Argentine Championship, the same year he achieved the International FIDE Master title. He also competed in the 1973 Mar del Plata Zonal tournament where he tied at first place with Grandmaster Miguel Quinteros. This competition gave him the grandmaster norm required to compete for the World Chess Championship.
Alonso has also represented Argentina in five Chess Olympiads from 1974 to 1984. In the inaugural World Youth Team Championship in Graz in 1981, he was a part of the Argentine team that won the gold medal - the first in Argentine history.
Currently, Alonso is involved in teaching and promoting chess, particularly to young people. He is a chess instructor at the Mar del Plata Club in Argentina.
