Boris Alterman is an Israeli chess Grandmaster, FIDE Senior Trainer and advisor of the Botvinnik Chess School. His highest ranking was 47 in July 2000. He was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine on May 4, 1970. Alterman gained international attention after winning the Lloyds Bank Open in London in 1992, and later the World Open in Philadelphia in 1993. He was also a member of the Ukrainian national chess team that won the 1992 Student Team Chess Championship.
Following Alterman's success as a player, he also developed an interest in computer chess. He became a member of the Deep Junior team, a chess computer that won multiple World Computer Chess Championships. He was also recognized as a notable theoretician, especially in the field of opening preparation, thanks to his series of chess puzzle books. Moreover, he founded the Alterman Chess Gymnasium in Tel Aviv, Israel which produced many prominent chess players.
While specializing in chess education, Alterman also created an online, interactive learning system - "Bobby Fischer 11th World Champion – A Winning Way of Play against The Sicilian Defence", and "Play Like Fischer".
