Arbakov has participated in many chess tournaments throughout his career. He won the Moscow Championship in 1978 and the Tallinn International Chess Tournament in 1979. In the latter, he placed ahead of former World Champion Mikhail Tal. Additionally, he took the bronze medal in the Soviet Union Championship in 1985. He won the Senior World Championship twice, once in 2007 and second in 2012.
The chess world has recognized Valentin Arbakov for his playing style, which is characterized by uncompromising battles, tricky tactical ideas and perfect endgame technique. He is known for using unorthodox and risky strategies in his games.
Arbakov also works as a chess coach. His notable students include Elena Zaiatz, a female grandmaster and Erik Teichmann, an international master. He also served as a coach for the Soviet chess team.
