Alexander Baburin is a Russian-born Irish chess Grandmaster. He was born on February 19, 1967, in Gorky, Soviet Union, now known as Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Baburin's early chess career includes him earning the International Master title in 1990 and the Grandmaster title in 1996.
Baburin relocated to Ireland in 1993, the country he has represented in multiple chess competitions. Among these include participating in seven chess Olympiads, leading the Irish team to win the silver medal in the 2002 Bled Olympiad. In 1999, Baburin triumphed in the Hastings International Chess Congress, and in 2000 won the 2nd European Union Championship.
Beyond his participation in chess competitions, Alexander Baburin is also known for his contributions to chess writing and education. He has written for several chess magazines and websites, as well as authored a book, 'Winning Pawn Structures'. Since 1997, he has been the editor of a popular Internet resource, Chess Today. In addition to this, he gives lectures and offers training courses to international chess players.
