Bagirov's first significant accomplishment in the chess world was becoming the national champion of Azerbaijan in 1993. A year later, in 1994, he secured the title of Grandmaster, which is one of the highest titles a chess player can earn.
Bagirov has also made a name for himself internationally. He won the Gotland Open in Visby, Sweden in 2004, and finished second in the same tournament two years later in 2006.
In addition to his work as a player, Bagirov contributes to the chess community as a trainer certified by the FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs), which is the international organization that governs the game of chess. He currently resides in Baku, Azerbaijan.
