Gerardo S. Barbero (4 May 1961 in Argentina – 27 March 2001, Budapest, Hungary), was a highly successful chess player, coach, author, and an International Grandmaster. He was born in Argentina and later became a naturalized Hungarian. He was a twice Argentine junior champion (1977, 1978) and also a three-time national champion (1980, 1982, 1984).

Barbero represented Argentina in several notable chess events including on three Chess Olympiads (the team won bronze at the 1980 tournament held in Valletta). Moreover, he also represented his country at three World Student Team Chess Championships, participating in events in Mexico City (1978), Warsaw (1979), and Mexico City again (1980). He also represented Argentina at the Pan American Team Chess Championship at two cities, Villa Gesell (1985) and Lima (1987).

After moving to Hungary, Barbero represented Hungary at the European Team Chess Championships in Pula (1997). Also, at the interzonal level of competition, Barbero took part twice representing Argentina at Las Palmas (1982) and Taxco (1985).

Aside from Argentina and Hungary, he lived in England for many years. Barbero was an active chess coach, and his most famous students were the Hungarian woman International Grandmaster Sofia Polgar and GM Peter Wells. He was also a chess author, having written "The Tactics of End Games", with another grandmaster, Rainer Knaak. Barbero died in 2001 at the age of 39 from cancer.
