Mateusz Bartel is a Polish chess player who was awarded the title of Grandmaster (GM) by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the international chess federation, in 2005.


Born on July 3, 1985, in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, Bartel honed his chess skills under the tutelage of Kaja Snarek, a well-known chess trainer in Poland. He gained early recognition as a talented chess player, winning four Polish youth championships in various age categories.


Some of the key milestones in Bartel's professional chess career include victory at the First Saturday Tournament in Budapest in December 2004, win in the Open section of the 2007 György Marx Memorial chess tournament in Paks, shared first place in the 2007 International Neckar Open, victory in the Polish Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2012, win at the international Gibraltar Chess Festival in 2012, and victories in 4NCL Rapidplay in England, 2012 and 2014.


Throughout his career, Bartel has also represented Poland in numerous national and international team events, including European Team Championships in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2017 and World Team Chess Championships in 2010 and 2017. He also participated in the Chess Olympiads representing Poland in 2010, 2012 and 2014.


Outside of his professional tournaments, Bartel played his part in promoting the game. He is a member of KSz Polonia Warsaw chess club and a co-founder of Akademia Szachowa. He also frequently appears as a guest in various Polish chess commentary programs.
