Julio Bolbochán was an Argentine chess Grandmaster. He was born on March 20, 1920, and passed away on June 28, 1996. Bolbochán won the Argentine Championship twice, both in 1946 and 1948. He accomplished even more on the international circuit where he represented Argentina in six chess Olympiads from 1950 to 1962 and was awarded the International Grandmaster title in 1977.
In 1950, he led the Argentinian team to gold at the 9th Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik. Two years later, in 1952, he won the Mar del Plata tournament. That same year, he achieved his best result in the Chess Olympiads, finishing second behind reigning world champion Mikhail Botvinnik at the Helsinki Olympiad.
In addition to his prowess as a player, Bolbochán was a celebrated chess journalist and author in his home country. He passed on his passion for chess to his brother, Grandmaster Jacobo Bolbochán, and his nephew, International Master Bernardo Roselli.
As an author, he penned several books on the game, including "My 60 memorable games," a work deeply respected by his fellow Grandmasters. He is remembered as a major figure in Argentine and international chess, and his contributions to the game are renowned to this day.
