Murray G. Chandler is a New Zealand-English chess grandmaster, author, and editor. Born in Wellington, New Zealand on 4 April 1960, Chandler started playing chess at age 13. In 1975 and 1976, he was awarded the New Zealand Chess Championship which led him to move to England in 1978 to pursue a career in chess. In 1982, he earned the British Chess Championship title.
In 1983, Chandler became the second New Zealander (after Ortvin Sarapu) to be awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE (the International Chess Federation). As well as representing New Zealand and England in various chess Olympiads, Chandler has won individual and team medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championships.
